Geomagnetic Activity is a dedicated GeoLira view for this part of the observatory. It combines the route-specific interface with the same source, freshness, privacy and evidence boundaries used across the platform.
Kp and ap describe planetary geomagnetic activity
Kp is a global index derived from a network of observatories and reported in three-hour intervals, while ap is its linear representation useful for analysis. GeoLira prefers GFZ as the authority for Kp and ap, with a limited NOAA fallback for live context where the contract permits it.
The NOAA G scale uses Kp but is not a local magnetometer
G1-G5 describes operational geomagnetic-storm levels tied to Kp thresholds. It does not mean the magnetic field changes identically everywhere on Earth. Local effects depend on geomagnetic latitude, ionospheric currents, ground conductivity and other spatial conditions.
Geomagnetic activity provides aurora and infrastructure context, not diagnosis
Elevated activity can increase the chance that the auroral oval expands and can matter to technical systems under specific conditions. Kp alone does not guarantee aurora visibility in one town and is not a health metric. Interpretation benefits from Bz, solar wind and local context.
