Map layers carry different evidence classes

The Earth map combines spatial products that should not be interpreted as one type of measurement. The seismic layer uses USGS events and the aurora layer uses the NOAA OVATION model. Weather or lightning context may be optional and stays UNAVAILABLE when no approved fresh ingest exists. Each layer preserves its own provider and semantics.

Revisions and freshness matter more than point count

USGS may update the same earthquake repeatedly. Canonical history keeps revisions, while the map shows the newest accepted version of one logical event so the same earthquake is not duplicated. Models and feeds are also checked for publication time; the last good layer does not automatically remain current after an upstream source stops updating.

A map gives context, not a local guarantee

A point or modeled area does not imply identical conditions everywhere inside it. ShakeMap describes post-event ground motion, OVATION models auroral activity, and surface visibility depends on additional local conditions. The map does not predict the date of the next earthquake and does not replace a measurement at the user's exact location.
